Motorcycle racing rewards speed, precision and nerve, and it has never handed anything out for free. Leanne Nelson has spent her career taking it anyway. She was the first woman to finish on the podium at the Australian Tourist Trophy, and she is the fastest woman around the Eastern Creek circuit on a 1000cc bike.
The Australian Tourist Trophy
The Tourist Trophy is a hard race. It is long, it is physical, and the entry list is full of genuinely quick riders. Finishing on the box there is not remarkable because a woman did it. It is remarkable because almost nobody does it. Leanne did, and a lot of riders who had never pictured themselves on that grid suddenly could.
Eastern Creek
The Eastern Creek record is the other half of the story. A lap time is not open to interpretation. You either put it in or you do not, and she did.
